Police today confirmed the arrest of three of the four men who visited the home of Kenyan athlete Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, four days before he died Sunday in a traffic accident in Kenya. The three were arrested today at the police station in the town of Kaptagat in Elgeyo Marakwet County (west), where the athlete was from, and were later transferred to the city of Iten, just over fifty kilometers away, for questioning.

Detectives want to question these individuals, whose identities have not been provided, to establish the nature of their visit after Kiptum&https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178217;s father, Samson Cheruiyot, raised the alarm hours after his tragic death, local media said.

The father on Monday called on the Kenyan government to investigate the circumstances of his son&https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178217;s death. &https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178220;There were some people who came a few days ago looking for Kiptum, but they refused to identify themselves. Although the date of the athlete&https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178217;s funeral has not been officially announced, sources from the burial committee assured the BBC that it will take place on February 24. The athlete, 24, died along with his coach, the Rwandan Gervais Hakizimana, in a traffic accident on Sunday night on the road linking Eldoret to Kaptagat (west), in a car driven by the athlete himself. Kenyan Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba traveled to Eldoret on Monday to express his condolences to Kiptum&https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178217;s family, to whom he promised that the government will work to offer him a &https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178220;national hero&https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178217;s farewell&https://extremesportsweb.com/wp-content/cache/background-css/extremesportsweb.com/?wpr_t=17140068178221;. The Kenya Athletics Federation (Athletics Kenya) announced Wednesday that it has cancelled the trials for the Pan-African Games that were scheduled for next weekend in honor of the world marathon record holder.

The accident unleashed a wave of condolences in Kenya and internationally praising the figure of Kiptum, called to mark an era in athletics for his youth and for being the main candidate to go under two hours in the mythical distance. He jumped to world fame last October 8, when he clocked a time of 2h00:35 and clearly lowered the previous record held by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge with 2h01:09, achieved in Berlin on September 25, 2022.
